The Mountain Leader qualification enables experienced mountain walkers to lead groups in the mountains, hills and moorlands of the United Kingdom and Ireland in summer conditions. Mountain Leaders must showcase skills including navigation, group management, handling of emergencies and their ability to educate.

The qualification does not cover any rock climbing or planned use of a rope, nor does it prepare the leader for working in winter conditions.
